Vegan ink – Tattoo Studio Il Gatto & la Volpe, Lucerne

Alright, I would like to give you a heads up: I got a tattoo! And in my eyes, it is amazing! So, at this point, I would like to thank Moe! She is the one who was designing and tattooing my very own tattoo.

Recently, I mentioned to my best friends that I will blog about the tattoo studio where I got my tattoo. One of them asked me: “Why? Have you been eating there?” 🙂 I know, I usually write about vegan food…about vegan restaurants. But lately I have extended the scope a little bit. I am writing about recipes as well as other vegan tipps. This is why, this post is dedicated to all the vegans out there who are thinking of getting a tattoo but are not fond of having any animal products inked under their skin.

So, if you would like to get a vegan tattoo, I highly reccomend Il Gatto & la Volpe Tattoo Studio in Lucerne. But let’s start from the beginning.

Sailors, prison inmates, tough bikers, mafia or gang members. For many years, those were the people that tattoos were associated with. Please don’t get me wrong, I do not intend to judge anybody with this post. But they definitely characterized the bad boy image of tattoos.

However, today, tattoos are quite well accepted within society. Bankers, lawyers, teachers, salesmen, scientists, clerical workers…nowadays, you’ll find all kinds of inked people, which is amazing. There is an interesting article about tattooed professionals in Forbes that I’d like to share with you, if you are interested in it:

Tattoos have found their way into pop culture. Tattooists have become artists and tattoos are a way of self-expression. Nonetheless, even if tattoos have arrived in the mainstream, they still have a mysterious, shady and exciting power of attraction. Getting a tattoo still has an impact on your body for the rest of your life. Tattoos can be very personal. And there is still that little bit of bad boy image associated with getting a tattoo.

Already in high school I toyed with the idea of getting a tattoo. I always thought that inked people are so cool and that it would be great to have something so personal and kind of immortal on my body. But I never got serious about it, until a few years ago. I started thinking about what kind of tattoo I would get. And in September 2014, I told myself that if in one year time I still want a tattoo, I’d do it. So, here I am…about one year later…I got my tattoo.

Tattoo Studio Il Gatto & la Volpe

As I live in Lucerne, I was looking for some tattoo studios around here. However, there was one thing that was very important to me. The tattoo needed to be vegan.

And if you are interested in what ingredients are not vegan in conventional ink, you’ll find a list here:

So, I went to a few places in my neighborhood but didn’t really find the right place. Until, a friend at work told me where she got her tattoos. She said: “I’m just gonna drop him a message and ask if their ink is vegan”. Obviously, it was! And coincidentally, Marco, owner and tattoo artist at Il Gatto e la Volpe, had the official opening of his own tattoo studio just one or two weeks after I was told about it. So, I thought I’d go by and check it out. And because Marco and his studio were absolutely lovely that day, I decided to go home, have a look at their artwork on the website and decide whether to get a tattoo at Il Gatto e la Volpe or not. That’s how I found Moe Ducommun. The very talented artist who I introduced at the beginning. I honestly fell in love with her artwork right away. I would even love her work if it wasn’t for tattooing. The drawings are beautiful. You’ll find some of her work on instagram. I, myself, do not have instagram. Apparently, I am not one of the cool kids anymore. But if you do, follow her:

The products

In order to prepare my skin for the following treatment, Moe used Hustle Butter Deluxe. I also used the hustle butter to moisturize my skin afterwards for the next few weeks. I have to say, this cream is amazing. And it smells really really good.

Furthermore, to actually make the tattoo, Moe used vegan friendly ink by World Famous.

 The verdict

A tattoo is something that you should actually be happy with for the rest of your life. Therefore, I am so happy that I have found (or Martina did it for me…thank you for that) the Tattoo Studio Il Gatto e la Volpe. Moe was really able to get my idea and artistically realize it. That’s why I can absolutely recommend the tattoo studio to anybody who would like to get a tattoo.

  1. Congratulations on your first tattoo! I like it. I can tell you that you may want to get more later. My tattoos are much smaller than yours but I now have 4 tattoos.(When I got my first one, I never thought of having more later.)
Anyway I never though of what ink was used for my tattoo. I got my tattoos in Amsterdam. I found a tattoo shop when I was walking in a street and walked-in and got one… You are really vegan!

In Japan, also tattoo has been becoming more usual but it is still not accepted in some societies. For example, I do not think that there is any banker or teacher who has tattoo. (At least if they have one, they will hide it.) Some companies may ask you if you have any tattoo at job interview and you will not get the job if you say “yes”.
I have found some inconvenient by having tattoos on my body in Japan…

    1. Thank you so much! Glad that you like it. You are already right…I think I will definitely get some more. But I decided to wait a while 😉 But sooner or later, I will follow your steps and get one or two more. Your story of getting a tattoo sounds very exciting and adventurous. I like it. I really think you are right and it depends on the culture as well. There are certainly parts where tattoos are less accepted than in Europe for example. I might get back to you…because I really think I might go travel to Japan next year. If not next year, then certainly within the next three years. So, I might need your advice one day.Btw, I am just watching Nole versus Roger! Very exciting so far. Can’t tell who is going to win. Of course, I hope it’s going to be Roger 🙂 Thanks for your comment. Always looking forward to hearing from you!

      1. I missed the game as it started at 5 am in Japan..It must have been worth watching! I really wanted to see Roger’s win. Anyway Group A is really tough to move onto the semi-finals. Roger already got the place for the semi and Novak will be another one. Although Berdych played well against Novak at Paribas Open 2 weeks ago, there will be no chance for Tomas to win against Novak. This means that Kei and Berdych cannot go to the Semi.
The game of Nadal vs. Andy will begin in one hour. It must be an exciting game!! Nadal has been better and better at final.

        1. Too bad that you weren’t able to watch the game. Yes, it was a great game! I didn’t see the game Nadal vs. Murray…but I think Murray didn’t play so well. Right now, I am watching Wawrinka vs. Ferrer. Stan just won the first set. Although, it didn’t look like he would win in the middle of the set

  2. Wow, Dennis! This is such a big step! I love the result and the message! The girls is talented and you must have been very brave to support the creation of this artpiece. Thumbs up!

  3. Hey Denis! I came across your blogs because I was trying to figure what the vegan meal on an emirates flight is like. Haha, 20 minutes later, I’m still here! Reading and enjoying your other posts and still trying to figure what it truly means to be vegan.
I wish I had seen this post before my recent trip to Lucerne, or would have definitely met you whilst there. I loved your vegan tattoo and I really liked the message it carries! I am so toying with the idea of getting one, maybe I shall gather some courage in a few more years.
So glad to have stumbled on your blog, Write to you soon!
    Shloka

    1. Hey hi Shloka, I am glad you like my blog. That’s a pitty, that we missed. But if you ever return to Lucerne, just let me know 🙂 Yeahh…it also took me a long time to gather the courage. But I think it’s very important to really think about what to get and where before getting tattooed. However, I never regretted doing it 🙂 I don’t know if you have seen it, but I already got two now. Looking forward to hearing from you!
